A Brief History of Mid-Century Modern design

The term “Mid-Century Modern” is a difficult term to define. Mid-century modern home decor originated in America back in the middle of the twentieth century, roughly around 1933 to 1965. It was heavily influenced by the German Bauhaus design and architecture school of the early twentieth century. Following World War II, many German designers emigrated to America, bringing new and modern design ideas with them. Designers including Charles and Ray Eames, Herman Miller, George Nelson, Arne Jacobsen, Isamu Noguchi, Cara Greenberg, and Eero Saarinen became famous for their decorative works during this era.

The Characteristics of Mid Century Modern Design

These are the major characteristics that we will find in a mid-century modern home:

1. Minimalist

Furniture from the Mid-Century Modern era is frequently quite simple, with sleek lines and a focus on efficiency and clean interiors. In Mid-Century Modern design, there is no room for excess. Light and airy areas with clean proportions and innovative practical shapes replaced heavy and bulky furniture.

2. Mixing materials and aesthetics

Handmade materials and natural materials are often used together in mid-century furniture design. We will also see modern pieces being paired with vintage statement pieces.

3. Fusion of indoor and outdoor

Mid-Century Modern architecture, like mid-century modern design, emphasizes the synthesis of manufactured structure with natural. Plants, as well as window treatments that foster a sense of continuity between indoors and outdoors, are frequently used in this style of décor.

4. Natural hues with a pop of colors

Mid - Century Modern decor uses bright accent colors against primary neutral tones. The mid-century color palette is rooted in nature, with earthy greens, bright fall oranges and yellows, muddy browns, sea blue-greens, and deep clay red.

There are 5 Mid-century colors that we should try:

1. Orange and brown

Brown and orange

A classic mid-century modern color combo is orange and brown. The brilliance of orange is muted by brown, especially when it comes from wood colors. In addition, the match emphasizes each color's warm nature, making this mid-century home fashionable and inviting.

2. Chartreuse and grey

If we are not familiar with the color name chartreuse, we might know lime green or apple green. They come from a similar shade of green with a hint of yellow. Paired with grey, this is a cool, fresh duo that will instantly add mid-century chic to your decor. When brought together in a room with architectural details such as angled and glass window walls, the style is unmistakably mid-century mode.

3. Teal, brown, and white

This sophisticated palette can impart a rich mid-century look in a room with the right furniture shapes. Don’t hesitate to layer your accents by using different shades of the same color.

4. Pink and brown

This room is inspired by the mid-century style, which frequently incorporates various colors of pink throughout the home. In colorful designs or textured fabrics, hues ranging from pastel to deep pink spring up. These pink colors look great with neutral brown or wood tones.

5. Wood and white

One of the most prominent elements of mid-century modern design is wood. Wood gives the feel of natural materials from outside into the home. It will create a stunning neutral tone of mid-century design with these color combinations and the proper furniture choices.
